Read the call from Students for Democratic Society (SDS):

Call for March 20 Student / Youth Action Against the War

The war in Iraq is entering its fifth year. Despite the fact that the overwhelming
majority of citizens want the war to end, despite the fact that U.S. forces
are being defeated by the Iraqi resistance, Bush recently announced plans
to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq. These troops are being committed to
fight and die in an unjust war based on lies and greed. Four years is four
years too many. The Iraqi people want the foreign occupiers out. They know
the U.S. government is not a "liberator," but whose presence means only
continued violence, death, and destruction.

We, students and young people here in the U.S., support the right of the
Iraqi people to self-determination. We refuse to accept this new strategy
to "expand the military," and reject any means the government may use to
make these new troops materialize - whether through the implementation
of a draft or the continued use of manipulative and deceptive recruitment
techniques. We refuse to be subtle in our outcry against this war, we
refuse to do nothing and be silent while people are killed in our name for
profit for the rich and we refuse to be sent overseas in a war for oil.

This past November, 100 students from twenty different college campuses
came together at a Students for a Democratic Society meeting in
Ft.Benning, GA and unanimously decided that March 20th be declared a
national day of student and youth resistance against the war! SDS is calling
on all students and youth to get out in the streets, get involved and get
organized against this war! We, the students and youth of this country,
are taking an active stand against US imperialism and fighting for a better
world. We reject this war of greed and profit, and are walking out of our
classes and taking to the streets in protest!

You have so much misinformed propoganda, it’s hard to even tell WHY one should actually be attending this walkout. Do we need to get the hell out of Iraq? Absolutely. Do we need to do it immediately? Only if you want genocide to immediately ensue.

While American entered the war for the wrong reasons and stayed in it for far too long, leaving now would mean an even greater loss of life. Before we can leave, we don’t have to gain the support of the Iraqi’s (who do not want us gone, the overwhelming majority of Iraqi citizens are scared shitless of us leaving right now), we have to control the damn terrorists coming in from Iran, Syria and Turkey. These groups are the ones stirring up trouble and supplying weapons and explosives to the small resistance cells throughout the country.

Like it or not, the US is the world police, because no one else will do it. As much atrocity and genocide as there already is in the world, there would be multiple times more if not for our military involvement in dozens of countries. The last time we decided not to be the imperialist power and stay out of another country’s war, Hitler rose to power and nearly destroyed all of Europe in the process.

I’m a communist as heart, but I realize as any sane person does, that neither communism or socialism will work in the societal structures we have today. Maybe a few dozen generations from now, but it’s a lot of wasted breath and time to try it in this time.

Also, what “deceptive recruitment techniques”? How can ANYONE sign up for the armed services these days and NOT know what they are getting themselves into? That’s the biggest load of crap Ive ever seen.

Also, mandatory service time for EVERY person at age 18 would be a GOOD thing for this country. People should have the option to serve either in military or civilian roles (aka Peace Corp, Red Cross, etc) but it would be a massive relief to our armed forces, it would give millions of kids a new and better path in life, reduce crime in this critical age group, and give people technical, social and management skills. Two years of mandatory service is not going to hinder anyone’s life. The great social states in Europe do it, and every hippy socialist here seems to love Europe, so why shouldn’t we adopt such a common-sense piece of legislation here as well?
