Gather in front of Estey Hall on Shaw University’s campus

HK on J is a movement spearheaded by the North Carolina NAACP that unites more than 100 progressive organizations from across the state that are active in a number of different struggles–from workers rights, to the environment, civil rights, anti-death penalty work, and much more–behind a 14 point People’s Agenda. Each year, thousands of people from across the state gather in Raleigh to march in support of the People’s Agenda and for social justice. It is a powerful day of action prior to the beginning of the North Carolina General Assembly and kicks off a year of organizing around the 14 point People’s Agenda. Over the past four years since it began, the HK on J movement has helped to win many progressive reforms in North Carolina, including same day voter registration and the recognition of a union for workers at the Smithfield hog processing plant. This year’s HK on J takes on a renewed importance especially in light of the economic crisis hitting working people across the state, as well as the struggles against resegregation of public schools in Wake County, Wayne County, and Wilmington.

We’ll be gathering in front of Estey Hall at 9:30am on Saturday morning! Look for the banners that say, “Youth and Students Demand: Defend Public Education! A Job is a Right!”
